“This makes it even clearer that Fern was obsessed with reopening the Gloaming,” I said. “These vines were here when I found her dead, so she was testing them?”

Malcolm nodded. “And perhaps she was testing the vines because she caused their growth. It appears she was taking a multi-pronged approach to her goal.”

“But she never got around to the second half of her list for the day,” I stated, pointing at the parts left that weren’t crossed out.

“Or she died before she could mark those tasks off,” he countered. “But testing the supplement blend was on her list, which might have been what killed her.”

“Yes, and notice that drinking it prevented her from going further on the ‘no cut’ grass project,” I offered.

“All of our suspects were related to Fern’s to-do list,” Malcolm said, looking around. “But who would have had sufficient access and knowledge of herbs to poison her?”

“Sue must know a lot about plants,” I stated. “And they’d met prior to Fern’s death to talk about the business. What if Sue didn’t like that Fern wanted to expand, rather than sell?”

He arched an eyebrow. “It’s plausible.”

“Chevy still doesn’t have a sufficient motive,” I continued. “Fern wanted to set up a date for them. That doesn’t sound like a murderous relationship.”

“We definitely need more information all around.” Malcolm lowered the paper, studying the worktable. He picked up a black notebook and began thumbing through it. There were tons of handwritten notes, diagrams, a few maps and an entire section labeled ‘Gloaming.’ I was surprised when Malcolm flipped past this, continuing his search.

“What are you looking for?” I asked.

He laid the notebook on the workstation, pressing the pages open. “That. I knew there had to be notes on the herbal supplement that Fern made for Cheryl at Hardcore Fitness. Here it is.”

I leaned forward, reading the handwritten notes.
